New Bedford's most iconic monument has been damaged.

The harpoon tip of the "Whaleman Statue" in front of the Downtown Public Library was recently bent. City workers have since removed the tip so it can be repaired.

The Mayor's Office says while vandalism may be a possibility, the bent tip may have also been the result of a child climbing on the statue.

The "Whaleman Statue" is 100 years old.
