The Downtown Campus of the Global Learning Charter Public School in New Bedford has been named in honor of Dr. Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan.

The Jacobs' cut a ribbon Tuesday at the entrance to the Jacobs Center for Education and Innovation, which has students enrolled from grades 8 through 12.

Dr. Irwin Jacobs is a New Bedford native, and founder of high tech giant Qualcom.  He and his wife have been a benefactor for the Global Learning School for the past ten years.

Jacobs provides a four year scholarship every year to a top student at Global Learning.  He and his wife also pay for high tech education equipment for the charter school.
