Despite the defeat of the state's gas tax indexing, SouthCoast Rail could still live on.

Chairman of the Mass. Legislative Transportation Committee, Representative Bill Straus, says the governor can make sure the project gets funded.

He adds that it's up to the people to pressure Charlie Baker's administration into finding an alternative way to fund the much needed rail service.

Without the gas tax indexing, the State will lose nearly $1 billion in funding for major transportation projects.

Now the legislature will have to decide which projects will receive funding and which ones will get the ax.
