FITCHBURG (AP) - Fitchburg State University says an armed intruder in the area has been taken into custody and the campus is secure.

Earlier Thursday evening, the school warned the campus and nearby community about the armed individual. An advisory on the university's webside urged people to stay indoors and call 911 if suspicious activity was observed.

No details about the individual were available or the incident.

University spokesman Matthew Bruun said classes do not begin until Sept. 3 and most students have not yet arrived. He says the advisory was posted as a precaution.

He referred questions to Fitchburg police who did not immediately provide details.
