NEW BEDFORD — The fisherman who fell off the New Bedford-based fishing vessel Miss Shauna has been identified as Thomas Quintin Jr., 55, of New Bedford.

Mr. Quintin was last seen on the boat on July 3, about 25 miles off the New York coast, south of Montauk, Long Island. The Coast Guard suspended the search for him after 28 hours.

Fishing was in Mr. Quintin’s blood. Both his grandfathers were fishermen and both were lost at sea. His father, two nephews and sister have all fished.

Fishing was the only work he knew. He began working in the industry at 17.

He was the captain of a New Bedford-based vessel for more than 20 years prior to his work aboard the Miss Shauna. Safety was always his top priority, his family said.

His family remembered him as an extremely devoted father and a man of deep faith. His family takes comfort knowing he is in heaven.
