FALL RIVER (1420 WBSM) — A longtime veteran of the Fall River Police Department was struck by a motor vehicle on Friday evening.

According to police spokesperson Sgt. Moses Pereira, the officer – a 17-year veteran of the department – was struck by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop just before 8 p.m. in the area of Robeson Street and Declar Street.

The vehicle that struck the officer then fled the scene, Pereira said.

The officer was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. He was treated and released a short time later.

The incident is under investigation by the Major Crimes Division, Accident Reconstruction Unit, and the Uniform Division.
