FALL RIVER (WBSM) — Just days after migrant families moved into a Somerset motel, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles announced expanded hours at the Fall River RMV and other locations, as well as increased road test access in Somerset.

“The expansion of customer service offerings is being done to accommodate existing customers and the thousands of additional new customers now eligible to apply for a driving credential under the Work and Family Mobility Act,” the RMV said in a release.

The Work and Family Mobility Act went into effect on July 1 and allows for eligible Massachusetts residents to apply for a standard driver’s license, regardless of immigration status, by removing the requirement for residents to prove that they are lawfully allowed to be in the U.S.

The Fall River and Leominster RMVs began to serve customers by appointment last Saturday, September 9. The Pittsfield RMV will begin doing so this coming Saturday, September 16.

“The Saturday appointments are available only for learner’s permit, driver’s license and ID transactions,” the RMV said.

The AAA office located at 869 Grand Army of the Republic Highway in Somerset will also offer additional road test appointments. The AAA offices in North Andover and Rockland are doing the same, as well as road tests being scheduled at the DCR Simoni Skating Rink in Cambridge.

Additional information can be found and appointments for learner’s permits, road tests or IDs can be made by visiting Mass.gov/RMV.
