A Fall River man was convicted for a New Year's Day murder Tuesday, according to Bristol County District Attorney's Office spokesman Gregg Miliote.

Jeffery Souza, 28, was convicted of second degree murder, assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm. The verdict came after nearly five hours of deliberation by his jury in Fall River Superior Court.

Souza shot and killed Kyle Brady, 28, of Fall River, in Fall River's Maplewood Park around 1:00 AM on January 1, 2015. Evidence showed that Souza and Brady had a longstanding dispute over a female and had arranged a fist fight at the park shortly after midnight.

"This was another senseless killing as the defendant brought an illegal gun to a pre-planned fist fight," said District Attorney Thomas Quinn in a statement. "I would like to thank the jury for their swift verdict, which was supported by the evidence. I hope the family finds some satisfaction in the fact that the defendant was held accountable for the killing of their loved one."

Souza will be held in jail until he is sentenced on November 7.
