I'm not sure if it is uniquely a Massachusetts thing, but for some reason, we seem to like low license plate numbers.

To be fair, my gut is that it is more of a boomer thing. In fact, it's probably something that's even older than that. I remember my grandfather was not only all about low license plate numbers, but he also was extremely proud of the license plate on his black Cadillac Sedan DeVille that read "ROCK."

I'd be lying, though, if I denied that I also appreciate a nice low number on a license plate. It's a bit of a status symbol.

I'm not alone, apparently, because thousands of Massachusetts residents took part in the low plate number lottery today, run by the state's Registry of Motor Vehicles. The state had set aside the numbers 1 through 1000 with their new red, white and blue plates that were made in honor of the nation's and the state's 250th anniversary.

Local Winners Across the SouthCoast

Locally, we had quite a number of winners, including Erin Anselmo, Carlos Lazcano Guzman, Norman L'Heureux, Aja DeSousa, Lisa Keene, and Tony Rebelo in New Bedford.

In Fall River, there were even more winners, with 12 residents getting the chance to switch over to the new blue plates. Corey Joy was lucky enough to score the MA113 number.

Dartmouth saw nine winners, there were six in Westport, Fairhaven had three, Acushnet had two, and Rochester and Wareham had one winner each.

What Happens Next for Plate Number Winners

Winners will be notified with details about how to make the switch over to their new low license plate numbers.
