Fall River Firefighter Joshua Hetzler Promotes Unity Through His Latest Music Video
Fall River firefighter Joshua Hetzler is making waves far beyond the fire station with his newly-released music video, "I See the World."
Hetzler, who performs under the artist name "Florian," has seamlessly merged his passion for music with a message of unity and understanding.
Hetzler, stationed at the Candeias Fire Station on Plymouth Avenue, has served as a firefighter for 14 years. While his commitment to public service defines much of his life, his love for music has been a lifelong journey.
The name "Florian" is a nod to St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, symbolizing his protective nature and dedication to helping others.
"I didn't choose the name 'Saint' Florian because I'm not a saint," Hetzler said. "Nobody's perfect! And this is hip hop, some of my songs go hard."
“When I first started putting music out, I thought my colleagues might tease me,” he said. “Choosing a name connected to firefighting was my way of embracing both sides of who I am.”
A Message of Unity
The music video for "I See the World" was filmed in Hetzler's hometown of Fall River and neighboring Providence, featuring landmarks like the Braga Bridge and the city’s courthouse. For Hetzler, using Fall River as the backdrop was deeply personal.
“Fall River is my home. I love my city and its history,” Hetzler said. “Why not showcase it in my first music video?”
The song itself tackles themes of division and misunderstanding in today’s world.
“We’ve become so divisive – whether it’s over religion, politics or culture. At the end of the day, we’re all human,” Hetzler explained.
His powerful lyrics, such as “I see a world where darkness will remain, unless we learn that inside we’re all the same” resonate with listeners, emphasizing the need for unity and mutual respect.
Collaboration and Creativity
Hetzler’s collaboration with musician Giulia Khoury of the talented Khoury Sisters duo adds a soulful dimension to the track. Having admired Khoury’s work for years, Hetzler finally had the opportunity to bring their styles together.
“She’s a phenomenal musician,” he said. “Her voice added so much depth to the message we were trying to convey.”
The music video was brought to life by video producer Sean Campbell, editor Nick Doyle and music producer Jared "JP" Pereira (known better at jpdirtyriva), who worked closely with Hetzler to create visually striking and emotionally impactful scenes.
From Firehouse to Hip-Hop
Music has always been a part of Hetzler’s life.
Raised on classic rock and '80s hits, he found a natural connection to rap through his love for wordplay and rhyming, a trait he attributes to his father’s clever quips. Despite initial skepticism from colleagues at the fire station, Hetzler’s talent has earned their respect.
“Once they heard my music, they realized I was serious,” he said. “It’s amazing to have that support.”
Looking Ahead
With a five-track EP released in August, Hetzler plans to continue making music that reflects his diverse experiences and emotions. While "I See the World" focuses on peace and positivity, Hetzler acknowledged that future songs may explore a range of themes.
“I’m human, and my music will reflect that,” he said.
"I'm definitely going to be making another video," Hetzler said. "A lot of people have asked me to make my next video the song 'Growing Up.'"
To his community in Fall River and beyond, Hetzler expressed gratitude for their support.
“I’m so thankful that people have embraced this song and its message. I hope it inspires everyone to be more peaceful and positive," he said.
As Hetzler’s music gains traction, it’s clear that this firefighter’s lyrical passion is striking a chord in the hearts of listeners, proving that creativity and compassion can thrive hand in hand.
