Fairhaven Police Capture Suspect During School ‘Stay Put’ Order
FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — Fairhaven Police captured a suspect this afternoon that had caused a “Stay Put” order to be issued at three schools.
Suspect Spotted Near Fairhaven Schools
According to Fairhaven Police Chief Daniel M. Dorgan, the department received a call at about 2 p.m. today, reporting a man with an outstanding warrant had been spotted at the Wash Ashore Car Wash located at 128 Huttleston Avenue. The man was reportedly cleaning out a vehicle.
“Stay Put” Order Issued for Safety
Once officers approached him, the man fled north, behind Hasting Middle School. Because the incident coincided with school dismissal, police notified the school department, which then issued a “Stay Put” order at the middle school and two nearby elementary schools.
Students from Fairhaven High School had already been dismissed for the day, Dorgan said.

Police Apprehend Suspect Without Incident
The suspect was quickly located in the wooded area east of the middle school and taken into custody without incident. He was unarmed.
“At no point were students in danger or in contact with the suspect and all established protocols were followed as Wednesday's incident unfolded,” according to a release. “The Fairhaven Police School Resource Officer was also on scene and positioned at the rear of the middle school, adding an extra layer of security.”
School Department Praises Police Response
"Thank you to the Fairhaven Police for their collaboration, communication and commitment to the safety of our students, staff, and the Fairhaven Public Schools,” the school department posted on its website. “Thank you for your continued understanding and support as safety is our top priority."
Cooperation Ensures Student Safety
“We are very proud of the professional working relationship we have with the Fairhaven School Department," Chief Dorgan said. "Today was an outstanding example of how our two organizations work together seamlessly to help ensure the safety of the youth of our community."
