A preliminary investigation indicates that Thatcher's red Chevrolet sedan was heading south on Main Street when it crossed the double yellow line into the northbound lane.

The red car then hit a gray Toyota Rav4 driven by a 36-year-old man, who had his 33-year-old wife and two young children in the car with him.

According to the D.A.'s office, the kids are aged four and one.

All four people in the Toyota were taken to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford with minor injuries.

Thatcher was also taken to St. Luke's, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 7:22 p.m.
