Fairhaven emergency personnel and Boston MedFlight responded to Fairhaven High School Friday morning, but it was just a drill.

The Boston MedFlight SafeTeens Program partnered with the high school and police and fire officials to create a realistic reenactment to display the dangers of distracted and drunk driving.

Fire Chief Tim Francis says the goal is to drive home the message to students.

"This year we stepped it up a little bit, made it more realistic. If you looked into the audience, looked at the students, some of them were getting really emotional and crying like it was real."

Drama students played the roles of injured drivers after a serious car crash.

The students took a different approach to this year's reenactment, ditching the prom night attire and "stereotypical" prom night drunk driving incident and wanted to show an everyday result of texting and driving.

FHS senior and drama student Marisa Rebelo was an actor in the simulation. "People don't realize that one second off the road and something this horrific can happen. We didn't want to make it just prom, we wanted to make it something that could happen any day, any time."

One student was extracted from the car and evacuated by a MedFlight helicopter.
