What Happened to Big Lots Nationwide?

It was one year ago that the company announced it would be closing 35 to 40 stores by the end of 2024, after previously closing 50 stores in 2023. Initially, the Fairhaven store was spared, despite a Boston news station falsely reporting its closure. The Seekonk store didn’t survive, though, closing in August 2024.

However, by Christmas 2024, Big Lots had instead decided to close all of its locations nationwide.

There was hope, though, as Big Lots was acquired out of bankruptcy at the last minute by Gordon Brothers Retail Partners. The plan was still to sell off the leases of about 500 of the chain’s 900 stores, keeping the remaining open locations primarily in the South.

The Fairhaven location has apparently been listed, but a recent visit over to the store indicates that should Big Lots consider a return to the Northeast, the Plaza Way spot could be a turn-key return.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that it could reopen, because in April of this year, Big Lots announced it was welcoming back 100 more stores – although again, mostly in the South.

Could the Fairhaven Big Lots Store Reopen Easily?

Shelving and signage was never removed from the store; they sit bare inside the building, with the fluorescent lights still burning bright. Dozens of the bright orange Big Lots shopping carts sit lined up by the front entrance, just waiting for shoppers to once again grab them on their way into the store.

It appears that all it would take is a shipment of new products and a few weeks of stocking shelves to bring back the bargains.
