FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — The East Fairhaven School will be closed for the next two days as cleanup continues following Sunday night’s fire in a second-floor classroom.

Fairhaven Public Schools Superintendent Tara Kohler posted to Facebook Monday afternoon that ServPro had been called in to clean up the residual soot from the fire and restore the affected classroom spaces.

Kohler said the cleaning process is expected to take “approximately two days.”

“As a result, East Fairhaven School will be closed on Tuesday, September 24, and Wednesday, September 25, 2024,” Kohler said. “Our current plan is to fully reopen the school for all students and staff on Thursday, September 26, 2024.”

The Fairhaven Fire Department responded to an alarm at the school at 7:25 p.m. on September 22. Crews arrived and determined there was smoke and heat detector activation on the second floor, in Rooms 232 and 240. They located a fire on the exterior wall of Room 232 and were able to extinguish it.

The department said late Sunday that the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have been caused by a dual-blade window fan plugged into an outlet on that exterior wall.

As a result, school was canceled Monday at East Fairhaven and will now continue for the next two days.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause and appreciate your understanding and support during this time,” Kohler said.
