New Bedford Police say they're conducting an active investigation following the discovery of dozens of syringes in a wooded area of the North End.

Lt. Amos Melo says the needles were discovered Friday morning in a wooded area off Nash Road, about 20-30 yards from the roadway.

Melo says the syringes were in a plastic bin, and two cardboard boxes about the size of shoe boxes. Some of the needles appeared unused, others were broken.

Lt Melo says the syringes are now in the custody of the city Health Department.

Melo says Police are trying to determine where the needles came from and how they got into the woods.
