Organizers of the first annual Walk and Learning Fair Saturday, sponsored by the Physicians Against Opioid Abuse said the event is creating more awareness about the opioid crisis on the Southcoast and the help that's available in the community.  .

But Dr. Michael Rocha tells WBSM News, he's hoping the Saturday morning event at Buttonwood Park will do even more.  "We're hoping the event is the first step in creating a climate that will allow those abusing opioids and other illegal drugs to feel more comfortable about coming in, and seeking help," said Dr. Rocha.

Dr. Rocha added, a community-wide effort will be needed to make progress, involing everyone from elected officials to law enforcement, educators, physicians and families.

The event featured remarks from Mayor Jon Mitchell and other officials, and included a "Wellness Walk" around the park. There was food and entertainment, and several booths were set up to display services available in the community.
