Typically when you hear "take a hike," it's a negative thing, but here on the SouthCoast, taking a hike is a leisurely activity we look forward to.

The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust (DNRT) has more than 40 miles of hiking trails in our area.

Year after year, crews and volunteers work tirelessly to meticulously maintain the beautiful nature paths.

This season, revisit a few of your favorites while taking part in a fun activity that the DNRT has set up for families.

What Is a DNRT StoryWalk?

"StoryWalk is a great way to get folks who might not normally be engaged with nature outdoors and exploring on the trails," DNRT Development & Outreach Specialist Kendra Parker said. "It's also a fun way to instill a love of reading in our young ones."

While it may sound new to some visitors, the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust has been creating StoryWalks for more than a decade.

The Hidden Gnomes at Ridge Hill Reserve

"There are quite a few little pinecone gnomes hung up on the trees," Parker said. "There is a big gnome, Wallace, at the end of the trail of little gnomes."

A group of DNRT volunteers are the ones who decorated the gnomes. Volunteers and staff then placed them out on the trail.

Why DNRT Staff Love the Program

"I love coming home at the end of the day and feeling like I made a difference in the world," Parker said. "I care deeply about the environment and helping to protect land, as well as introduce the beauty and benefits of the natural world to so many people is incredibly fulfilling."
