History of the Compound Called Chip Chop

Sitting on 20 acres of land in Vineyard Haven is the sprawling Chip Chop beach compound. It was built in the 1940s for Broadway star Katharine Cornell. According to its seller, Sotheby's Realty, “it has hosted a broad spectrum of well-known figures from the worlds of literature, theater, cinema and politics.”

Chip Chop is so grand that it needs two addresses and two separate lots. It also has a mile of private shoreline, with access to both Vineyard Sound and Lake Tashmoo. The compound is complete with four homes: a three-bedroom main house, a two-bedroom caretaker’s cottage and two elegant beach houses.

Not to mention the stunning swimming pool and private tennis court in the backyard.

Diane Sawyer’s Love for Chip Chop & Martha’s Vineyard

Sotheby’s shared with People that Sawyer and her late husband, Mike Nichols, bought the home in 1995 and renovated it while keeping its “neoclassicist” charm intact.

It appears Sawyer is ready to part ways with her stunning compound and has entrusted Sotheby’s to find new buyers for 794 and 690 Chappaquonsett Road.
