Dartmouth Ride of Silence to Honor Man Killed in 2010 Bicycle Accident

A Ride of Silence in Dartmouth on Wednesday, May 21 will honor a young man killed 15 years ago while riding his bicycle in Boston.

Eric Hunt, 22, was a Dean's List student in his final year of studies at Wentworth Institute of Technology, attending on a merit scholarship. According to his father, Attorney Thomas R. Hunt, Eric attended Bishop Stang High School, was a member of the soccer team, served as a counselor at Camp Massasoit, and worked with under-privileged kids in Boston while attending school there.

"I still celebrate Eric's birthday every year," Hunt said. "In my mind, Eric is still alive. He's not down with us but is up in Heaven. As one of my friends said, 'Tom, I now know there is a Heaven, because there's no other place Eric could be.'"

Ride of Silence is an international organization which began in 2002 in Texas. In 2024, Rides of Silence were held on three continents, 14 countries and 40 states in the U.S. Its mission is to honor those who have been injured or killed in bicycle accidents, to raise awareness that bike riders are here, and to ask that we all share the road.

Hunt is organizing Wednesday's Ride of Silence. He's asking bicycle riders to gather at Dartmouth High School on Bakerville Road at 6:45 p.m. Riders will depart at 7 p.m. sharp and travel over an eight-mile route that Hunt describes as being "as flat as flat can be" before returning to Dartmouth High School.

Riders will travel in single file at no more than 10 miles an hour. This is a somber event, so there will be no talking, except in case of an emergency. Helmets are required, and no donations will be asked for or accepted. The ride is open to all.
