The Bristol County District Attorney's office says criminal charges against a New Bedford Police officer suspected of stealing drugs from police lockers should not be filed at this time.

District Attorney Sutter's office conducted a review of the investigation into Sgt. John Perreira's involvement in the disappearance of percocet pills from police department booking room lockers last November.

In a letter to Chief David Provencher, Sutter says there is insufficient evidence to support any criminal charges against Perreira, but would be willing to review additional information or evidence in the case.

Perreira resigned from the police department soon after it was discovered the pills were missing.

Chief Provencher tells WBSM News he will follow Sutter's recommendation, and will not file charges against Perreira.
