Recent events in Belgium and Paris have put a renewed focus on the dangers of a terrorist attack.

Incoming New Bedford Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro tells WBSM's Brian Thomas it's something that the department takes very seriously especially when the city plays host to large events.

"I think the city is well placed for it, we prepare for large events like the Half-Marathon and many others like that, that is part of our planning strategy and tactics that we put into play," said Cordeiro.

However, Cordeiro says that law enforcement efforts are most effective when citizens keep their eyes and ears open and alert authorities whenever they spot suspicious activity.

"That's our best line of defense," said Cordeiro "everyone just looking out for each other, looking for anomalies in their neighborhood, or wherever they are to something that isn't right, if you see something you've got to tell somebody."

Cordeiro also urges people to err on the side of caution so law enforcement can investigate.

"At least we can get the system rolling to see if it means nothing, and if it does, great," said Cordeiro "and if there is something to it, we can try to intervene before it becomes a major event."

Cordeiro, and newly appointed Deputy Chief, Captain Paul Oliveira, are scheduled to formally sworn in on Thursday.
