The City Council hopes to talk with New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes about why he feels the need to look for employment somewhere else.

The Council approved a motion asking the chief to meet with them and other invited officials to address any concerns he may have with remaining in the city and what can be done about them.

Council President Brian Gomes filed the motion and says money could be the issue.

"At this time I think it's negotiating with the administration with what his pay should be and how it matched up with a contract with the fire department and whether he has recieved that or not. I have understood that he hasn't received it and this is the reason why he may be out looking elsewhere," said Councilor Gomes.

Chief Gomes recently applied for the fire chief position in Marion, but was not selected.

He is invited to meet with the Council's Committee on Public Safety at their next meeting, which is still to be scheduled.
