The New Bedford City Council honored Peter Barney with a standing ovation Thursday night. 

Barney, the current full-time administrator in the Assessors Office, is retiring next month after 35 years at City Hall. 

In remarks to the Council, Barney praised the people of New Bedford. 

Councilor At Large Denis Lawrence Jr. wished Barney well in his retirement, but says he'll be sorely missed around City Hall.....

During his 35 years on the job, Barney has held various positions at City Hall, including Treasurer and Assessor. 

He's also an expert model builder and has written hundreds of articles on railroad history.  He's a member of the National Narrow Gauge Railroad Hall of Fame.
