Thursday night marked the end of an era on the New Bedford City Council as David Alves took part in his final meeting as Councilor at Large.

After 12 terms on the Council, Alves decided not to run for reelection this past November so he could spend more time with his family.

"The time that I missed with my own two children because I was at council meetings or committee meetings I'm looking to make up with my two grandchildren; that's the next chapter in my life. As I turn the page, I'm looking for interesting and exciting things to do," Alves said.

Alves was joined by his family as his colleagues shared memories and thanks of his 24 years of service to the city.

"You will be sorely missed. You always brought balance to the council," said Ward 1 Councilor James Oliveira.

"You've given back so much to the city, but now you're giving back to your family," said Ward 6 Councilor Joe Lopes.

Many councilors made note of Alves's statesmanship and dedication to the job and his constituents, which as a Councilor at Large included the entire city.

Alves was also a leader in supporting veterans throughout the city. He is himself a veteran, serving three years of active duty in the United States Army during the Vietnam-era.

When asked if he'll remain close to city politics, Alves said "You never get it out of your system." He added that even though he isn't on the Council any longer, he's honored to remain a go-to person for solving problems.

"I think people don't remember who's in or who's out, they just remember who they can talk to, who they can rely on," said Alves. "I'm complimented I'm on that list for a number of people in the city of New Bedford."

Later in the meeting, City Council President Brian Gomes relinquished his seat to Alves, who presided over the remainder of his final session.

Thursday was also Gomes's final meeting serving as City Council President.

Alves served as president twice, once in 2006 and again in 2007.

Newcomer Ian Abreu will fill the vacant seat once the Council convenes for the first meeting of the 2016 term in January.
