Dozens filled Williams Street in front of New Bedford City Hall Thursday evening for a flag raising ceremony celebrating the National Day of Portugal.

Local elected officials were joined by a special delegation from Portugal, including Teresa Ribeiro, Portugal's Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs, and Domingos Fezas Vital, Portugal's Ambassador to the United States.

The nation's flag was raised as the Portuguese national anthem was sung, followed by a speaking program revolving around the importance of remembering the sacrifices and contributions made by Portuguese-Americans and Portuguese around the world.

The celebration will last throughout the weekend with traditional food, games, dance, music and more on Acushnet Avenue in the city's north end.
