WAREHAM — Authorities in Wareham are investigating after a car was found completely underwater in the Wareham River.

The Wareham Department of Natural Resources says members of the department, Police, and Fire officials were dispatched to Tempest Knob Boat Ramp on Oak Street after a car was seen under the water.

The vehicle and the surrounding area was checked for possible victims. None were located. The owner of the vehicle was notified of the situation.

The car was removed from the water. A small chemical release was found on the surface of the water. Due to the spillage, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has placed a temporary shellfish closure on the inner portion of the Wareham River.

No further information was immediately available.
