How Cape Cod Swimmers Can Avoid Shark Attacks
Summer is finally here. While the frigid temperatures and persistent cloud cover may suggest otherwise, the calendar shows we’re just days away from June. It’s almost time to fire up the grill, put in for vacation days and head to the (gulp) beach.
Why Are People Afraid to Swim in New England?
If you're anything like me, you love spending time at the beach, but stepping into the water (especially here in New England) can be intimidating. I’m happy to swim in the ocean when we’re on vacation in the crystal-clear Caribbean, but the murky greenish-brown waters of Massachusetts set my imagination on fire.
I can’t help but picture strange, shadowy creatures brushing against my legs and feet just waiting for a chance to bite.

Are Sharks Really a Threat in Massachusetts?
Over the past decade, we’ve learned that sharks live not just in our fears, but in our nearby harbors and bays (including the waters off of Cape Cod and the Islands (and even closer).
Increased shark sightings and occasional encounters have made shark safety a growing concern for beachgoers and vacationers throughout Massachusetts.
How Can You Avoid a Shark Attack at the Beach?
If the idea of a shark encounter makes you hesitant about going in the water, you’re not alone. Luckily, there are some smart precautions you can take (and things you can avoid) to greatly reduce your risk.
