Mother's Day is this Sunday, so don't forget to give Mom a call, or better yet, stop by and tell her how much you love her.

It breaks my heart when I hear aging women tell me they don't hear from their children very often, if at all. They tell me their kids are busy with their own lives or have simply forgotten about them altogether. That is a sad and all too common occurrence.

Mother's Day, or some variation of it, is celebrated in countries all over the world. Wikipedia says not everyone celebrates Mother's Day on the same day, but most countries observe the occasion between March and May. While some countries have celebrated mom for centuries, the tradition didn't catch on in the United States until the early 1900s.

History.com says Anna Jarvis established America's first Mother's Day in 1908, and it became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. The site says, "More phone calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year" and "often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent."

I lost my mother in 1995 after a quick bout with cancer. Mom was only 67 years old when she died. It has been 27 years, but I still think about my mother every day, and what I wouldn't give to spend one more Mother's Day with her.

Cards and flowers make nice gifts, but more than anything else mom would love a phone call from you or to see your face on Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms in our area.

If you'd like to share a picture of your mom I would love to see it. You can post it on our Facebook page under this story or send it to us via the our app.

I never know what to get my mom for Mother's Day, so I decided to ask the opinions of local moms, and they did not disappoint.
