New Bedford firefighters are spending the day loading up box trucks with non-perishable food, toiletries and other supplies.

The items, gathered by police and fire stations throughout Bristol County, are being shipped down to New York to be used in hurricane relief efforts. New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News Superstorm Sandy caused a lot of damage to our South, and Bristol County residents have realized how lucky they are.

Over 20 pallets, each six feet tall, are being loaded onto two trucks to be taken to Queens and Brooklyn tomorrow morning. Chief Gomes says donations have been so overwhelming, another truck may be needed to make the trip.
