The Boston Globe has won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for its coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing.

The announcement of the award came as the city prepares for the anniversary of the bombing. It was met with a moment of silence in the Globe newsroom for the bombing victims.

The committee said it awarded the prize to the Globe for its ``exhaustive and empathetic coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings and the ensuing manhunt that enveloped the city, using photography and a range of digital tools to capture the full impact of the tragedy.''

The attack last April 15 killed three people and injured more than 260 near the finish line, transforming what is typically a celebratory event into a scene of horror and heroics.

At least 16 people lost limbs. (Associated Press)
