Back in 2013, the New Bedford-based Standard-Times wrote about the problems for local fishermen based on a potential presidential appointment.

That appointment has now come into reality.

Steve Urbon spent his career as a reporter, editor, and columnist covering the city of New Bedford and its fishing-based economy for the local newspaper. When President Barack Obama was considering appointing Ron Klain as his Chief of Staff, the liberal journalist sounded the alarms. He explained to the local audience that Ron Klain's wife, Monica Medina, was hostile to the local families and small businesses that earn a living from fishing the Atlantic.

President-elect Joe Biden has announced Ron Klain will be his Chief of Staff.

The people of New Bedford and most of the area towns including Fairhaven, Dartmouth, Mattapoisett, Marion, and Wareham all voted for Joe Biden rather than Republican Donald Trump for president in 2020. Elections have consequences.

Medina and her husband are a Washington D.C. power couple. They are both smart and focused. They aren't concealing their political opinions and they aren't shy about working towards their personal goals within our system.

In the last days of the Obama Administration, the president used his executive power to restrict fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. President Trump used his executive power to roll back some of those restrictions.

We can expect a Biden administration to impose more restrictions on the fishing industry. The people of Greater New Bedford voted to elect Joe Biden and elections have consequences.
