Commuter rail service to the Southcoast is one step closer.

The Army Corps of Engineers has designated a route through Stoughton as the "preferred route" to extend commuter rail from Boston to New Bedford and Fall River.

\Gov. Deval Patrick made the announcement in New Bedford......

Patrick is hoping to break ground on the project before he leaves office in January, 2015.

For Tony Oliveira of New Bedford, the sooner the better.  Commuter rail service to New Bedford ended in 1958, and Oliveira was the last ticket-taker on the job.....

Oliveira says he still does push ups.  He wants to be around when the commuter train rolls back into the Whaling City.
