The Darwin Awards are a tongue-in-cheek honor recognizing the stupidity in some individuals. Enter 19 year old Dominick Alves of County St., New Bedford, who was arrested when he brought $1,000 worth of heroin to New Bedford District Court this week. Here's the ironic twist of this story; Alves was appearing before a judge to clear up a default warrant on a prior drug charge!

After Alves appeared before the judge, he was ordered held and escorted to the court's lockup and placed in a processing area. Court officers discovered 10 grams of heroin on the floor where Alves was seated. He was immediately arrested and police seized $254 he had in his pocket from drug sales. Mr. Alves was charged with possession of heroin with the intent to distribute.
