The New Bedford City Council will soon begin another session with a new City Councilor, Councilor-At-Large Elect Ian Abrieu joining the ranks and a long time Councilor-at-Large , David Alves retiring.

As he prepares to leave office Alves spoke with WBSM's Brian Thomas about his time in the Council and offered some words of wisdom to Abrieu, the man who will take his seat, telling him his best day on the council will be the day he's sworn into office.

"Everyone comes over and congratulates you, you're everyone's friend, and you haven't made an enemy yet," said Alves "you haven't voted on anything, so 50 percent of your votes are gonna be people like it and 50 percent don't like it, you haven't not returned that phone call yet, it's an interesting career."

One of their major tasks for the council will be deciding who will serve as their president and Alves says he's pretty sure that person will be Councilor-At-Large Linda Morad.

"I think Linda has earned the respect of her colleagues, I think Councilor Morad, has expressed an interest in it, and I think that she will get the support," said Alves "in fact I'm pretty confident that she will."

Alves also discussed KG Urban's withdrawal from the bidding process for the Region C Casino license saying he was disappointed and disputing a belief that two casinos in the region wouldn't work, arguing that Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods remain viable despite their close proximity.

Alves last day on the council will be January 4th.
