A spokesman for New Bedford Public Schools confirms the school district and the Alma del Mar Charter School have been given a two-week extension, till March 12th to reach agreement on a move to create 450 new charter school seats in New Bedford.

The two sides are working on a memorandum of understanding that in the end, must be approved by Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley.

As part of the deal, Alma del Mar would acquire the former Kempton School off Shawmut Avenue.

The transfer must still be approved by the School Committee and the City Council. Alma hopes to open its new school in August.
