Acushnet Firefighters Battle Perry Hill Road Farm Fire

ACUSHNET — Acushnet firefighters were joined by others from local departments as they spent hours Tuesday battling a blaze on a farm on Perry Hill Road.

According to a Facebook post from Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher, the fire spread from an agriculturally permitted fire.

Acushet firefighters arrived at about 4:30 p.m. at the farm and “found large piles of logs and mulch burning in an area of approximately 200 feet by 120 feet,” Gallagher said. He said no structures or equipment were threatened by the flames.

Gallagher said Firefighter Andrew Corrigan assumed the role of incident commander and realized water supply would be a challenge, because there are no hydrants in that part of time. Tankers were called in from Rochester, Freetown, Lakeville, and Dartmouth’s District 3. Mutual aid was also provided by the Mattapoisett and Fairhaven departments, and the Acushnet Department of Public Works and Acushet Police also helped out at the scene.

According to Gallagher, 35 firefighters spent several hours battling the fire.

“By the end of the incident, well over 100,000 gallons of water had been moved from hydrants via apparatus to the base of the fire,” he said. “That is an incredible amount of good old Acushnet H2O.”

Gallagher thanked those who provided support and noted how difficult the fire was to battle.

“We are thankful that this incident did not result in any injuries or damage beyond wood, mulch and agricultural debris,” Gallagher said. “I also want to commend the men and women of our department for their smarts, muscle, sweat and strain. Fires like these are labor intensive as the fire hides in all the little pockets of large piles of stuff.”
