NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — For the 24th consecutive year, New Bedford-based South Coast Towing will provide free tows for those who party just a little too hard on New Year’s Eve as part of its “Safe Rides Home” program to ensure both people and their vehicles get home safely.

How South Coast Towing’s Safe Rides Home Works

The service will be available from 12 a.m. until 3 a.m. on January 1 in the communities of Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, Freetown, New Bedford and Westport.

Why the Program Started

South Coast Towing owner Chris Medeiros told WBSM in 2024 that the idea for “Safe Rides Home” came when he was called to the scene of a crash.

“I went to an accident that was an OUI, a really bad one,” he said.

At that moment, he decided he would offer free tows and rides home to hopefully keep a crash like that from happening again. To date, he's towed well over 100 cars for free as part of the program.
