The actor who starred in the TV series "The White Shadow" is dead.

The Screen Actors Guild says Ken Howard passed away today at the age of 71.

Howard also starred in NBC's "Crossing Jordan," but he made his mark in CBS's "The White Shadow" during the late 1970s. For three seasons he starred as Ken Reeves, a white former Chicago Bulls player coaching basketball at a mostly black high school in South Central L.A.

In 2009, Howard won an Emmy for his performance in the TV movie "Grey Gardens." Howard also served as the president of SAG-AFTRA.  (Metro Networks Inc.)
