A man from Brockton was not charged for the first time, nor the second, third, or fourth time, but rather a fifth time, for driving drunk on New Year’s Eve.

According to WCVB 5, officers Richard Gaucher and Derek Scully responded to the intersection of Belair and Earle Streets for a two-car-accident around 11:35pm on New Year’s Eve.

When officers arrived, they found one car up on the curb and learned that another vehicle was involved in the crash. That vehicle, which was driven by the 72 year-old, drove and fled the scene.

The male victim was driving north on Belair Street, approaching Earle Street, when a car taking a left turn struck the driver's side of his car, forcing him onto the curb.

However, the vehicle that the victim hit did not flee the scene too far. That car drove only a little more than a hundred feet away to the Brockton Housing Authorities apartment building.

Officers then went to the rear of the complex and found a man, later identified as Robert Delaney, standing outside of a damaged car.

Delaney stated to police that he was trying to make a left turn when a speeding car hit him.

When officers started talking to Delaney, they detected a strong odor of alcohol. Several field sobriety tests were then conducted and Delaney failed all of them.

Delaney, 72, of Brockton, was then issued a summons to appear in court on charges of his fifth offense drunk driving, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.

Delaney is expected to be arraigned today in Brockton District Court.
