Gail Fortes, Executive Director of the YWCA in New Bedford, hasn't let concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic slow down the work of her agency.

Since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the YWCA has continued its mission with the help of Zoom, staging a series of virtual community discussions about race.

Fortes told Townsquare Sunday this week that the virtual series had more than 500 people join in. There were many issues raised, said Fortes, with a goal to better understand one another.

Fortes is also a member of the Mayor's Commission on the Use of Force by Police. She said the commission has met and faces a busy schedule ahead as it attempts to present its recommendations to the mayor sometime in August.

Townsquare Sunday is a weekly public affairs program that highlights individuals and organizations working to make the SouthCoast a better place. The program airs every Sunday morning at 6 a.m. on 1420 WBSM.

If you would like to be a guest on the program, please e-mail the host at jim.phillips@townsquaremedia.com.
