New Bedford’s Your Theatre Presenting ‘A Few Good Men’
The 79th season of Your Theatre Inc. in New Bedford is wrapping up next month with a production of A Few Good Men at the Steeple Playhouse, located at 159 William Street.
A Classic Story Returns to the Stage
The original stage version, a military legal drama written by Aaron Sorkin, appeared on Broadway in the late 1980s. It was then made into a movie starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Jack Nicholson, released in 1992.
Your Theatre will present A Few Good Men beginning on May 8 with seven performances over two weekends. The director is Your Theatre veteran Eric Paradis, and he joined us this week on Townsquare Sunday.
"People knew this was going to be a hit right from jump street," Paradis said. "In fact, just before the production hit the stage, Sorkin had already sold the rights to the movie."
Paradis said people who loved the movie will get the same satisfaction when watching the stage version, with a couple of surprises as well. "This was an easy choice because it has such name recognition, and as a piece of theatre, it is incredible," he said.
Director Highlights Challenges of Production
"The big challenge here is managing 15 actors, and managing the scenes," Paradis said. "The first act alone has more than 30 scenes. We have to be very creative with it."
Cast Brings Iconic Roles to Life
Paradis said the cast has really captured the scenes. "They've been amazing, it's been a joy to work with them," he said, adding that at least half had never seen the movie, and a couple of young actors didn't know about it at all.
In the movie, Jack Nicholson played the role of Colonel Nathan Jessup and commanded every scene he was in. Your Theatre's production will feature Teddy Hendricks as Jessup.
"He is certainly worthy of stealing a scene," Paradis said. "He has a voice you will never forget. He has a strong presence on stage, both physically and talent-wise, and is nailing those classic lines that everyone remembers, but also the dramatic lines before."
Performance Dates and Ticket Information
Your Theatre's A Few Good Men will feature seven performances at the Steeple Playhouse, May 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 (two shows) and 17. Tickets are available on the Your Theatre website.
