Many Young Adults in Massachusetts Still Live With Their Parents
It's harder to leave home these days.
How Many Young Adults Still Live at Home?
"One in three U.S. adults (ages 18-34) now live with their parents," according to research cited by Visual Capitalism. "The share ranges from 44.1 percent in New Jersey to just 12.3 percent in North Dakota, revealing a wide geographic divide."
According to the site, "Nationally, the figure now stands at 33 percent, meaning one in three young adults still live at home."
Visual Capitalism uses rounded 2025 U.S. Census Bureau data via FinanceBuzz to reach its conclusions.
What does the data say about Massachusetts?
Where Massachusetts Ranks Nationally
Massachusetts ranks ninth in the nation for young adults living at home, with approximately 35.7 percent residing with their parents, a figure that sits just above the national average.

Why the Northeast Leads the Trend
The numbers are particularly high in the Northeast, where housing costs and other expenses make it difficult for many young people to afford to live on their own.
Connecticut has the second-highest number of young adults living with their parents at 41.3 percent. New Hampshire ranks seventh at 36.5 percent.
Rhode Island has the 14th-highest rate of young adults living at home at 33.8 percent, significantly higher than Vermont at 26.4 percent, ranked 35th overall. Maine and Oregon tied in 36th place at 26.2 percent.
The National Association of Home Builders' Eye on Housing report says, "The share of young adults living with parents increased in 2024, interrupting the post-pandemic trend of moving out of parental homes."
Resources for Young Adults in Need
Not all young people are fortunate enough to have a home to go to. The Massachusetts Office of Health and Human Services website provides connections to resources available for youth under 25 covering housing, support, and stability issues.
"Getting support starts with housing – and also includes food, safety, mental health, school, and work," according to the site. "If you're under 25, local Homeless Youth Service providers can help connect you to the resources that match your needs."
