A sprawling estate in Western Massachusetts that once belonged to the Massachusetts-based Yankee Candle founder Michael Kittredge II has sold for $4.55 million, far below the $23 million asking price when it was first listed in 2023, or the $14.9 million when it was re-listed last year.

WCVB-TV reported the property, the 60-acre estate in Leverett, Massachusetts, near Amherst, "drew national attention for its unusual collection of amenities and more than 120,000 square feet of living space."

"It's like a resort, but at the same time it's like a town, and in itself. And  ot only that, it's a home," listing agent Johnny Haddam told the station.

From Scented Candles to a 60-Acre Luxury Compound

"Michael Kittredge II, who died in 2019, bought the original property, which included a three-bedroom Colonial, in 1984 for $144,000, records show," according to Boston.com.

Kittredge sold his majority stake in Yankee Candle in 1998 for a reported $500 million. Yankee Candle restructured its debt in 2023 and eliminated dozens of jobs the following year.

New Jersey Buyer Plans Luxury Getaway and Event Space

According to the Daily Hampshire Gazette, the estate was "bought by a New Jersey golf professional who intends to keep the site intact as a private residence."

"The buyer, according to records filed with the Franklin County Registry of Deeds, is Juggler Meadow LLC, whose manager is David Reasoner of Saddle River, New Jersey, reported The Gazette. "Reasoner is the PGA head professional at the Ridgewood Country Club in Ridgewood, New Jersey."

Boston.com reported the new owners plan to "preserve the property and turn it into a luxury getaway and event space."

Whatever their plans, I'm sure they'll have fun. What do you give someone like that for a housewarming present?
