Looking for weekend plans for you, your kids and your friends? Not to worry. The Westport River Watershed Alliance has you covered.

On Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the WRWA will host a Family Fun Day and Open House at its River Center. It will be a day filled with fun activities that are worth checking out, no matter your age.

"This is an adaptation of River Day, not quite as involved, but focused more on our new location here at the head of Westport at 493 Old County Road," Community Outreach Director Steve Connors said. "We'll have all hands on deck. Our educators and the science director will be here to show off the education center on the first floor with aquariums filled with native species, a high-powered microscope and even an interactive sand table."

There are always things to see and learn when it comes to the Westport River, what lives in it and what measures you can take to preserve it

"Honestly, it's a great way to welcome people and show off what we have, what we have done over the past 40-plus years to keep it clean, and to also interact with the public," Connors said. "It's a fun way to get people to come up to the Head."

The alliance moved from its Main Road office to its new location in 2019, but soon after opening, the pandemic hit. With restrictions put in place, the group couldn't let anyone in or get the opportunity to make the big splash they wanted.

Here's what to expect for Saturday:

  • 10 a.m.: Toe Jam Puppet Band at Westport Free Public Library (presented by Friends of the Westport Library)
  • 9 a.m.: Guided paddle with Osprey Sea & Surf Adventures from Hix Bridge to the Head of Westport. Bring a kayak for $30 or rent one for $60 ($20 benefits the alliance). Register at ospreyoutdooradventures.com or (508) 636-0300.
  • 11 a.m.: River Center open with interactive sand table, aquariums featuring native creatures, pollinator garden and more.

Other than the Kayak tour, this is a free event. More information is available by contacting outreach@wrwa.com.
