A Westport firefighter remains hospitalized after tumbling 30 feet off a roof Thursday night.

According to EastBayRI.com, volunteer firefighter Steven Lopes has been upgraded to serious condition from critical, after falling from the roof of a house at 153 American Legion Highway where crews were battling a chimney fire. The 47-year-old Lopes suffered multiple traumatic injuries, and is being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.

Another firefighter, 41-year-old Robert Manchester, also fell while trying to prevent Lopes from falling. Manchester fell ten feet, and has been treated and released from Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Preliminary findings of an investigation suggest the firefighters slipped on ice, which formed after a well-meaning tenant of the 2 1/2 story house tried to extinguish the fire.

Lopes is known throughout the region for his Portuguese Fireman comedy act.
