Call me biased, but there's something about a summer morning in Westport that just feels right. The quiet roads, the stone walls, the smell of fresh coffee and a good home-cooked breakfast create the perfect vibes. Starting this weekend, there will be a new way to soak it all in with the debut of The Coop, a breakfast sandwich food truck from the family behind Gray’s Daily Grind.

The shiny silver trailer will make its soft-opening debut on Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, serving made-to-order breakfast sandwiches from 7 a.m. to noon. You’ll find it parked across from Gray’s Daily Grind in the white-shell parking area overlooking Rocky Delano Brook, just steps from the Massachusetts-Rhode Island line in Adamsville.

For Aida Delano, helping launch The Coop is more than just another family project. It is the latest chapter in a business that has become a labor of love for her family.

A Family Tradition Continues

Aida’s parents, Bruce and Sarah Delano, purchased Gray’s Daily Grind about five years ago after being longtime fans of the local coffee shop. While the café itself has been a fixture in the area for much longer, the Delanos embraced its history and put their own personal touch on the beloved neighborhood stop.

“I basically do PR and social media,” Aida said. “I worked as a barista for a few years, and now I do some stuff in the back as well. This weekend, I’ll be taking orders and kind of running The Coop.”

Gray’s Daily Grind itself has deep roots in the community. Before becoming the cozy café locals know today, the property was once a working gristmill and general store, adding another layer of history to the picturesque setting.

Breakfast Sandwiches, Your Way

The concept behind The Coop is intentionally simple: build-your-own breakfast sandwiches made fresh to order. Guests can create a classic bacon, egg and cheese or sausage, egg and cheese, while also choosing from a variety of add-ons and toppings to customize breakfast exactly how they like it.

For now, the focus is on doing the basics well, although Aida said the family hopes to introduce creative specialty sandwiches down the road. “Right now, it’s just breakfast sandwiches your way,” she said. “But definitely moving forward, we’d like to make some specials on the menu.”

The food truck will also have bottled water available, while customers can easily pop across the street to Gray’s Daily Grind for a cup of coffee, locally roasted by Coastal Roasters, along with fresh pastries and other breakfast offerings.

The Story Behind the Name

If you are wondering why a breakfast truck is called The Coop, the answer is as wholesome as it gets. “We’ve always had chickens growing up,” Aida laughed. “We love chickens, and it just so happens that the logo for Gray’s Daily Grind, when we bought it, is a chicken. So we thought it would be funny and fitting and cute to have it be The Coop.”

The name also serves as a little tribute to the Delano family’s own backyard chicken coop, tying together the family’s personality with the business they have grown to love. Although the Delanos call Fairhaven home, Aida said Westport has always held a special place in their hearts. “We’ve always loved Westport,” she said. “We were longtime fans of Gray’s Daily Grind, which is why my parents ended up buying it. We kind of just loved it.”

A New Summer Stop on the Westport-Adamsville Line

The soft opening this weekend will help the family gauge interest and fine-tune the operation, with future hours and updates to be announced through Gray’s Daily Grind and The Coop’s social media pages.

Whether you’re heading to the beach, taking a Sunday drive through the countryside or simply looking for an excuse to grab a breakfast sandwich by the water, The Coop looks ready to become one of those simple summer traditions people look forward to every weekend.
