WAREHAM — A local celebrity chef has been arrested on charges of drunken driving in Wareham.

Wareham Police say Officer Charles Pillbury was off-duty on Monday when he was approached by a man in a car on Main Street at about 11:50 a.m. The man, Jose Rego, 47, of New Bedford, asked Officer Pillsbury for directions while he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Officer Pillsbury called for an on-duty officer to respond to his location at Besse Park. Officer Joseph Cardoza arrived and had Rego perform a field sobriety test, which Rego was not able to pass. Rego was placed under arrest.

Rego is a renowned chef, having won an episode of Food Network's Chopped in 2012 and again besting his competitors on the channel's Cutthroat Kitchen in 2016.

Later that night, at 8:35 p.m. officers responded to Tobey Hospital for a male causing a disturbance in the emergency room.

Officers Cardoza and James White advised the male to calm down, however, he kept yelling expletives.

The man was placed under arrest and while being taken to the cruiser he went to the floor refusing to get up forcing the officers to carry him to a cruiser. After a brief struggle, he was placed into the cruiser. He continued his tirade at the station where he had to be carried to a cell.
