A Wareham man charged with killing a Falmouth woman almost a decade ago has been acquitted. John Rams Jr. was found not guilty Wednesday by a Barnstable Superior Court jury of the 2005 slaying of Shirley Reine. The 41-year-old Rams was convicted of breaking into Reine's home in 2002 and stealing a safe.

Authorities say he was hired by Reine's stepson, who sought information about the family trash-hauling business.

Reine was killed three years later and Rams was charged based largely on his own alleged statements to police and jailhouse informants.

Defense lawyers attacked the credibility of witnesses and questioned why the stepson had never been charged.
