The New Bedford City Council honored dozens of Vietnam veterans outside City Hall Thursday evening.

The Council awarded members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 499 with medallions honoring their service.

Walter Catojo says the ceremony offered the veterans an opportunity for a true hero's welcome.

Soldiers that never made it home were also honored and were remembered with a moment of silence.

Councilors Jim Oliveira and David Alves are also Vietnam veterans and received their medals later on at the City Council Meeting.

Veteran John Spencer say the ceremony was a welcome surprise.

Council President Joe Lopes says this is only a small gesture from the Council to both those who returned home and those who didn't.

Local veterans have previously received citations, but these medals are something more tangible to honor their sacrifices.
